FAMILY & HISTORY

The Fitz-Ritter Winery is one of the few Palatinate Estates with a rich history of democratic activity. It has been in the same family since it was built in 1785 and is now owned in the ninth generation by Johann Fitz.

Through his involvement at the “Hambach Festival” in 1832, Johannes Fitz (the “Red Fitz”) made significant contributions to the years leading to the “March Revolution” in the states of the German Confederation in 1848. His political involvement was continued by further ancestors who became members of the Parliament of the First German Congress in the Pauls Church in Frankfurt.

A constant at Fitz-Ritter has always been the view beyond the local horizon while being true to its own roots. Alice Fitz was active for many decades in establishing Fitz-Ritter’s export to the Untited States. Konrad Fitz contributed to an outstanding reputation of the estate regionally and throughout Europe. “Our ancestors were world-wide travelers. Thus they were able to develop a sense and appreciation for our heritage which extended beyond our local boundaries”, says Johann Fitz who earned his degree at the Universitiy of California, Berkeley.

Translation: "We live in the most beautiful Country on Earth, Full of God’s blessings, Yet we must all be reduced to the role of Beggars, Because of the damned Taxation!"

SOPHISTICATED YET DOWN TO EARTH:

A constant factor at Fitz-Ritter has always been the view beyond the local horizon while being true to its own roots.  “Our ancestors were world-wide travelers. Thus they were able to develop a sense and appreciation for our local heritage”, says Johann Fitz.
